Self-Awareness is an important skill for attaining success in life. Our behavior to all the external situations is governed by the internal mental talk and processes. An important fact to accept is that we are not aware of our thoughts and thought patterns. Thoughts are the beginning of creating reality. By analyzing the quality of our thoughts one can become aware of oneself i.e Self-Awareness.
Self-Awareness unveils negative & destructive thinking pattern which we initially are not even aware of. This brings improved decision making and behavioral pattern.
Exercises for enhanced Self-Awareness
1. Ask yourself "Why"?
Self Awareness is all about knowing what you are doing, the motives behind your decisions. Before taking any decision, just ask yourself- WHY? Evaluate your reasons and if you find a positive reason to support your decisions.
This will raise the level of confidence in your actions.
2. Learn to say to "No" to yourself
Saying No to yourself is simply putting an end to short-term gratification. This leads to the strengthening of self-power of sticking to your ambition. It is an exercise just as we strengthen a muscle when practiced regularly.
This helps you to withstand the daily temptations like junk food craving, gossiping etc. You can start by saying "No" your daily habits which you want to change.
3. Keep a check on your Self Talk
On an average, the human brain thinks around 60,000 thoughts per day, which means 35-48 thoughts per minute/per person. It means a non-stop commentary which may or may not be beneficial.
Understand your responses to your emotions. Focus your self-talk pattern during your happy and sad moments. Digging deep into this help you to understand your belief system. This will make you aware of your positive or negative feedback loop.
There is no need to be tough with yourself, Be compassionate to yourself. Develop a healthy relationship with your thoughts. Boost yourself when you lose a battle. Stay positive.
4. Accept your Flaws
First, we need to accept the fact that "No one is Perfect". It is human nature of being critical to others and ignoring our own flaws. Along with this, just awareness is not enough, the acceptability of the same is equally important. Self- Awareness is accepting your true image. This is where the self-growth begins.
Learn to accept your mistakes than giving excuses. This is the first step of the ladder of Self-Awareness. Celebrate your achievements and boost up yourself to do better.
5. Know your Personality Type
It is very important to know your personality type to know your strength and weakness. You need to understand in which category you fall- Introvert/Extrovert. Learn about your Myers-Briggs type.
To know more and understand yourself in a better way to conduct your personal SWOT analysis (Strength, Weakness, Opportunities, Threats). This will take you to another level of Self-Awareness.
6. Constructive feedback
Everyone has blind spots in thinking pattern. These are self-deceit or one-dimensional viewpoint one knowingly or unknowingly hold.
Value constructive feedback but remember to get from people whom you consider as your mentors; whom you trust. Ask it from a person to speak the truth about you. Be prepared to hear what you need to hear, not what you want to hear.
7. Evaluate Yourself
Track your progress by keeping a journal. Rate yourself on self-awareness. Keep a check how many times you repeat bad habits, repetition of negative thoughts etc.
Set smaller goals. Track your progress at the end of the day. Celebrate your achievements.
8. Meditation
Meditation is the best way of raising self-awareness. This will make you aware of the thoughts that distract you so that you can work on eliminating them. It is simple just focus on your breathing. You may start with smaller session s of 10 minutes in the beginning.
You just need to find a quiet place, relax, and count your breath. In the beginning, you may find some distractions but with time you feel the benefits.
9. Be aware of what you put inside.
It is not only about thoughts, it's about food also that effects your thinking pattern. The better the quality of food, better will be your health and obviously better thought process.
